Selected Masterworks of Modern Chinese Painting

The Tsao Family Mozhai Collection (4 Volumes)

Zhao Li and Wan Qingli

This comprehensive selection of masterworks from the encyclopedic Mozhai Collection documents the context, developments and breakthroughs of traditional Chinese brush painting during the Modern period stretching from 1840 to 1965. The four-volume set beautifully illustrates each of the 311 works selected with a full-sized color plate as well as full-page brushwork and composition details. A team of more than twenty scholars from the Central Academy of Fine Arts, Shanghai Museum, and Hong Kong University thoroughly documented and researched each painting and authored over three hundred original entries visually analyzing each work of art. In addition to unpublished masterworks by artists such as Qi Baishi, Huang Binhong, Wu Changshi, Zhang Daqian, Fu Baoshi, and Lin Fengmian, the publication also includes exceptional works by lesser known but highly accomplished artists (178 in total) for an encyclopedic view of the entire period. The fourth volume includes a complete seal and signature catalog, Chinese-, English- and Japanese-language bibliographies, and a full scholarly index. It serves as both the definitive collector's guide and the most exhaustive scholarly reference for traditional Chinese painting of the Modern period.

"The comprehensive view provided here is unmatched in any other publication on Modern Chinese Painting, whether in the sheer number of artists represented, or in breadth, quality and rarity of the works selected. Infused with the insight and acumen gained over sixty years of collecting, this is a seminal publication, the culmination of a lifetime of connoisseurship."

--Shan Guolin, Chief Curator and Head of the Chinese Painting and Calligraphy Department,
Shanghai Museum
